Joint Pain

It is a condition which is caused by accumulation of ama and aggravation of vata. (Ama is a toxic by-product of improper digestion. )This ama circulates in the whole body and deposits or gets collected at the sites which are weaker. When it deposits in the joints and at the same time there is aggravation of vata , it results in a disease called amavata that all results of Joint Pains.

  • The main symptom of this disease is severe pain in the affected joints. The tissues in and around the joints become inflamed and movement of the joint becomes extremely painful. Untreated arthritis may lead to permanent deformity of the affected joints.
  • Fever
  • Immense pain & stiffness in affected muscles, specially stiffness and pain (i.e., fingers, wrists, elbows, knees, ankles) in the morning.
  • Excruciating pain and stiffness in the joints

Root Causes

  • The following medical conditions are some of the possible causes of Joint pain as a symptom. There are likely to be other possible causes.
  • Joint injury, Joint strain, Joint sprain, Previous joint injury
  • Infections – many infections cause aching joints and aching muscles
    • Viral infection, Common cold, Flu, Bacterial infection

Causes include both internal and external factors. Ama associated with Vata (internal moving body air) quickly moves to different parts of the body and accumulates where circulation is sluggish or slow such as the hands, knees and other bone joints filling the blood vessels with a waxy type material. It is also more common in old age when Vata naturally increases in the body. Meat diet, foods such as ice cream, to much concentrated dairy such as aged cheese or goods of sour cream or cheese with your meals, cold foods especially during cold weather which weaken the digestion, heavy cakes, pastries and candies, packaged and processed foods with little fiber are the main dietary causes. Gas producing vegetables and legumes also create more internal air which moves the toxins to different parts also the condition. This ama blocks tissue pores and passages. This causes heaviness and weakness of the heart which becomes the seat of the disease.

Trigeminal Neuralgia

Trigeminal Neuralgia is one of such very painful neuropathic disorder (disease caused by the impairment of nerves). Trigeminal nerve is an important nerve in our face that carries out various sensory functions like touch, pain, temperature, pressure etc. A damage to this nerve causes trigeminal neuralgia. The pain lasts for few seconds only, but very intense. The pain is triggered by a slight touch of the area near the nerve. It affects only one side of the face. In rare cases it affects both sides. This disorder is considered as the most painful disorder known to mankind. It is also known as suicide disease because of its intense pain. The disorder affects our day to day life activities like talking, eating, shaving etc.

  • Intense pain in the facial region during chewing, brushing teeth shaving etc.
  • The pain can be felt around eyes, lips, scalp, jaws and forehead
  • The pain begins at the angle of the jaws and proceeds through the junction lines of maxillary and mandibular lines.
  • The pain will be severe like an electric shock.

Frozen Shoulder

In a frozen shoulder the shoulder girdle will be stiff because of which free movement of the joint becomes impossible. In medical terms, it is called adhesive capsulitis of shoulder joint. It may happen after an injury or overuse or from a disease such as diabetes or a stroke. The tissues around the joint stiffen, scar tissue forms, and shoulder movements become difficult and painful. The condition usually comes on slowly, and then goes away slowly over the course of a year or more. The incidence of such a pain even though not so age specific, younger age group is prone for this complaint. But in few individuals it is momentary and lasts only for few months. In Ayurveda, this condition is correlated to Apabahuka.
Stages of Frozen shoulder:
It typically develops slowly, and in 3 stages. Each stage can last for months.

  1. Freezing stage: Shoulder movements cause pain. The ability to move shoulder reduces.
  2. Frozen stage. Pain may decrease but stiffness increases
  3. Thawing stage. The range of motion in your shoulder begins to improve.

Risk factors :

  • 40 year old and older, particularly women.
  • People with prolonged immobility or reduced mobility due to Rotator cuff injury, fractured arm, stroke, after a surgery etc.
  • People who have certain diseases appear more likely to develop frozen shoulder. Diseases that might increase risk include Diabetes, hyper active thyroid, under active thyroid, heart disorders, TB etc.

Spinal Pain & Disc Prolapse

Herniated disc, bulged disc, protruded inter vertebral disc (PIVD) are the different names of one condition. This is a condition where- disc in between the two vertebral bodies starts peeping out on one side- anterior or posterior. These discs are just like the bags filled with liquid material, which work like shock-absorbent. There are several hard bony vertebrae in the vertebral column and there is plenty of movements with these vertebrae. When we look on one side to other side, we look upwards, down wards or we twist and even we bend forward or backward in each and every condition, there will be a movement in these bones, these discs decide the free movements of the spine. Along with this- when we walk or run there will be shocks and jerks to all these bones and these bags decide that there wont be any kind of jerks in between the bones. So, these discs are of multiple uses.

Our spine is inverted “S” shaped. There are two main curvatures in the spine which are free to move- Cervical and Lumbar curvatures. These curvatures of the spine are maintained due to the spaces in between the two vertebrae. Whenever there is a loss or change (specially reduction) of this space between two vertebrae- pressure will be exerted on the intervertebral discs. This uneven pressure on the disc causes- protrusion/bulge/herniation of the disc- this is the condition known as SLIPPED DISC, in layman language. Why does disc slip

Generally, slipped disc condition is diagnosed by its signs and symptoms. When slipped disc starts exerting pressure on the nerves surround the disc- the nerve will be excited which gives sensation of- Pain, Burning or Numbness in the related area of the nerve. This sensation can travel long far away to the areas, which are being supplied by the nerve and can be limited to a particular location in neck or back even.

Arthritis & Gout

Gout is a painful metabolic disease resulting in inflammation and the deposition of uric acid in the cartilages of the joints. Gout first affects the big toe causing it to swell and become very painful. In the next stages it spreads to the ankles, knees, joints of hands and feet, the wrist and elbow.

When the human body breaks down the chemicals called purines, it produces uric acid. Purines are found naturally in our body as well as in food. Normally, uric acid dissolves and goes through the urine via the kidneys. But if the body is producing too much uric acid or if the body is not excreting enough uric acid, it starts accumulating in the body. This build up results in the formation of sharp, needle like crystals. When they accumulate in the joints or surrounding tissues, it causes pain, inflammation and swelling.

  • Fever
  • Swelling
  • Pricking pain
  • Itching
  • Burning sensation.
  • Swollen joints
  • Change of color of the skin
  • Pain and redness in the small joints of the body.
